Our class text this half term - to promote a love of reading - will be ‘Wonder’ by R.J Palacio. Wonder tells the story of August, who was born with a facial deformity. He is about to start mainstream school. How will the children react to August?

White Rose Maths


In maths this half term, we will start by exploring place value for the first 2 weeks of Year 6. We will then move onto addition, subtraction, multiplication and division for the remaining 5 weeks of the half term. Each topic will recap previous learning, and move our learning on using problem solving and reasoning, linked to the end of KS2 SATS.

Geography/ History


History
In this unit, the children will explore the world of the Maya, and debate whether they should continue to be remembered today as a significant culture. The children will begin by learning about the lives of the Maya today, before focusing on ancient Maya architectural achievements, their religion and surviving writings. They will also study the possible reasons why the Maya city states declined after 900 AD, looking at conspiracy theories and considering whether everything they read online is reliable. They will consider the issues faced when studying a culture where only limited types of evidence are available, predominantly archaeological evidence.

Science


Our topic for Science this half term will be ’Living Things and Their Habitats. In our learning this half term we will be describing how living things are classified, are similar and different, including microorganisms, plants and animals. We will also be giving reasons for classifying plants and animals based on specific characteristics.

PSHE/RSE/ RE


In PSHE we will be basing our learning on the following question: ‘How can we keep healthy as we grow?’.

In RE will be looking into ‘Creation and science: conflicting or complementary’.

Art/ D & T/ Music


In Art, we will be basing our work on the artist Andy Warhol. We will be delving into the different techniques to express feelings, exploring screen printing and create patterns for purposes.

In Design and Technology we will be designing and making our own ‘Pop-up book’.

During music this half term, we will focusing our learning on the song: ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams. We will be focusing on the style of pop and motown.

Spanish


In Spanish, we will be learning numbers 31-50. We will be repeating and saying numbers 31-50.

PE day – Tuesday


Swimming will be Thursday or Friday (depending on group)
Invaders, boot camp and healthy body – inside and out.
