The Curriculum - Whitfield Primary

At Whitfield Valley Primary Academy we aim to make learning fun.

Each half term every class changes its topic and all of the learning environments within each class are changed to represent the new topic. The role play areas make the central theme in each classroom. The schools English curriculum has a half termly book focus, which covers reading and writing objectives. The maths curriculum in our school follows the clear principles of the White Rose maths Mastery curriculum from the EYFS to Year 6. All other subject areas are taught discretely, covering the national curriculum expectations. Our EYFS classes teach a thematic curriculum, with all learning areas covered through a clear topic/ theme.

At Whitfield Valley Primary Academy our classes follow the ‘All Aboard’ Phonics Programme to teach phonics (early reading skills). Once children have completed this and are competent in their decoding skills, they progress onto learning spelling skills using the Rising Stars programme.

Each class also engages in an educational visit to support the topic which further helps bring the learning to life. All of our curriculum documents can be found below, giving a clear overview of our curriculum. Further information can be gained by contacting the school office.

All children enjoy whole class reads from 3.00pm each day. This is 15 minutes of purposefully chosen, age appropriate books. These books have been chosen to allow/ promote discussion regarding the nine protected characteristics of The Equality Act 2010. Below you will find the year group overviews of the books the children read at this time of the day and how they support children's open conversation and awareness of the diverse world we live in.
