Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
Reading this classic children's story, we will follow Mole, who ventures from his underground home to the outside world where he meets Ratty. Mole and Ratty’s relationship blossoms into a heart-warming friendship, as they embark on adventures and meet other characters such as Badger and Toad. We will discuss and examine how Mole, Ratty, and Badger try to help Mr. Toad, when he finds himself in trouble following his obsession with the latest trend – motorcars! Within our English lessons, we will be writing a narrative to entertain and a letter to persuade.

Reviewing all multiplication and division related facts, formal methods of calculating and multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000.
Geography/ History
The Americas - Can you come on a great American road trip?
For our Geography focus, we will use the eight points of the compass, with an atlas, map and/or Google™ Earth, to locate cities in the continent of North America, and to discover something about some of these cities and their states. We will discover something about South American regions, countries and cities, and improve knowledge about the differences between continent, country and city. Children will research some countries and cities in North and South America, and identify similarities and differences; naming, locating and describing some of the main environmental regions of North and South America. Children will also research the historic Route 66 and some of the cities it went/goes through, before ending our Geography focus by developing our speaking and listening skills through creating a presentation to demonstrate and explain our knowledge.
Science
Living Things and their Habitats
Children will recognise that living things can be grouped in a variety of ways. We will explore and use classification keys to help group, identify and name a variety of living things in their local and wider environment.
Finally, children will recognise that environments can change and that this can sometimes pose dangers to living things.

PSHE/RSE - How do we manage risks in different places?
This half term, we will understand how people’s behaviour affects themselves and others, knowing how to respond to aggressive or inappropriate behaviour (including online and unwanted physical contact) and how to report concerns. Children will understand how to model being polite and courteous in different situations and recognise the respectful behaviour they should receive in return. We will discuss the relationship between rights and responsibilities; understanding about the right to privacy and how to recognise when a confidence or secret should be kept (such as a nice birthday surprise everyone will find out about) or not agreed to and when to tell (e.g. if someone is being upset or hurt.) We will discuss the rights that children have and why it is important to protect these.
Children will understand that everyone should feel included, respected and not discriminated against; how to respond if they witness or experience exclusion, disrespect or discrimination
RE - How and why do people mark the significant events of life?
During RE lessons, children will identify the terms dharma, Sanatan Dharma and Hinduism and say what they mean; making links between Hindu practices and the idea that Hinduism is a whole ‘way of life’ (dharma). Children will describe how Hindus show their faith within their families in Britain today (e.g. home puja) and how Hindus show their faith within their faith communities in Britain today (e.g. arti and bhajans at the mandir; in festivals such as Diwali) We will also identify some different ways in which Hindus show their faith (e.g. between different communities in Britain, or between Britain and parts of India)
Art/ D & T/ Music
Art – Our artist focus is Leonardo Da Vinci
During Art and Design, children will improve their mastery of art and design techniques by working on a variety of scales, using colour mix and match: tint, tone, shade. Children will observe colours and use colour to reflect the mood and to show the effect of light on people from different directions
D&T – Our focus is Mechanisms; Light
Within design and technology lessons, we will be learning about electrical items and how they work. Analysing and evaluating electrical products in order to design a product to fit a set of specific user needs. Finally, we will make and evaluate a light for a specific purpose.

My Family
This half term, we will ask ‘who is in your family’ and answer ‘in my family I have. ’ Children will be able to write who is in their family and apply their knowledge of numbers when describing families. We will begin to engage in conversations about families; recognising masculine and feminine nouns and broadening our vocabulary and understanding by using a dictionary.
PE day
Our PE Day will be on a Wednesday. Our sport focus will be ‘Dynamic Dance’ in which we will identify, practise and create an individual dance that reflects the style of line dancing, demonstrating an awareness of the music’s rhythm and phrasing when improvising. Our fitness focus will be ‘Mighty Movers’ (Boxercise) We will participate in creating and performing a boxercise sequence with increased accuracy and precision. Our health focus will be ‘Healthy mind - Going for goals’
Spellings/ Reading
Our spellings this half term will focus on words with a /shun/ sound, spelt with ‘sion’ ‘ssion’ ‘tion’ ‘cian’
We will also focus on words with ‘ough’ to make a long /o/oo/or/ sound

Matilda- Roald Dahl
Despite being born into a family that dismisses and mistreats her, Matilda is exceptionally gifted, with a love for reading and an intellect far beyond her years. She possesses extraordinary abilities, including telekinesis, which she uses to overcome various challenges. Matilda's journey is one of resilience, cleverness, and a quest for justice, culminating in her ultimate triumph over the oppressive forces in her life, including her neglectful parents and the tyrannical headmistress, Miss Trunchbull. With the support of her kind-hearted teacher, Miss Honey, Matilda finds a loving environment where her talents can truly flourish.
To explore the text further, our genre coverage will be a setting description and character description of Matilda and Crunchem Hall. We will then move onto writing to entertain by creating a play-script, which the children will then perform.

History- The Ancient Egyptians – What were the achievements of the Ancient Egyptians?
For our History focus, the children will become historians and identify the reasons why the Ancient Egyptians are considered a successful civilisation. The children will understand the different types of evidence that can be used to reach conclusions about the Ancient Egyptian way of life, using their disciplinary skills to assist. They will also use sources and artefacts to reach conclusions about the Ancient Egyptian people through studying the pyramids.
Science
Sound
Our Science focus for this half term is sound. The children will be identifying how sounds are made and recognising that vibrations from sound travel through the medium to the ear. We will also look at patterns in sound comparing pitch and volume. We will also be working scientifically throughout all of our science lessons, by conducting different experiments.
Educational Visit
Ancient Egyptian workshop
The children will experience an Ancient Egyptian workshop. During the course of the workshop, the children will get the chance to meet the world famous Egyptologist Trimbold. Trimbold explains about life in ancient time and will mummify one of the pupils whilst acting out the daily life of an Ancient Egyptian priest. He will also tell the story of the uncovering of Tutankhamen’s Tomb and the pupils will get the chance to meet an Ancient Egyptian tomb robber.

PSHE/RSE – What strength and skills do we have?
This half term, the children will understand how to recognise personal qualities and individuality, whilst developing their self-worth by identifying positive things about themselves and their achievements. We will discuss and celebrate our achievements and explore how these attributes and achievements may make us feel, understanding our own personal attributes, strengths, skills and interests contribute to their self-esteem. Then, we will look at setting goals for ourselves and discuss how to manage our emotions and actions when there are set-backs, learning from our mistakes and reframe unhelpful thinking.
RE - What do Hindus believe that God is like? (Brahman/atman)
During RE lessons, our focus will be on Hinduism, identifying some Hindu deities and explaining how they help Hindus describe God. The children will make links between the Hindu idea of everyone having a ‘spark’ of God in them and ideas about the value of people in the world today, giving good reasons for their ideas. They will also make simple links between beliefs about God and how Hindus live (e.g. choosing a deity and worshiping at a home shrine; celebrating Diwali) and identify some different ways in which Hindus worship. As a class, we will raise questions through discussions and suggest answers about whether it is good to think about the cycle of create/preserve/destroy in the world today.

Art – Our artist focus is Leonardo Da Vinci
We will be studying the artist Leonardo Da Vinci, creating realistic portrait paintings and drawings by using shading and hatching to complete art in the style of Leonardo Da Vinci. We will create our own artwork using light and colour to convey mood.
D&T – Our focus is Mechanics- Light
Within our design and technology lessons, we will be identifying the difference between electrical and electronic products. Firstly, we will evaluate a range of existing lights and their features then develop a new functional light using a circuit. Finally, we will evaluate ideas and products against a given success criteria.

Numbers 11-20 and Greetings
This half term, we will be saying and repeating numbers from 11-20 and counting to 20 independently in Spanish. With our partners, we will be orally rehearsing and writing different greetings, asking how people are and revisiting hello and goodbye in Spanish. We will continue to broaden our vocabulary and understanding by using a dictionary.
PE day
Our Sport topic is ‘Invaders’ which involves keeping possession of the ball and using ABC (agility, balance and coordination) to keep control of a ball in a competitive situation. Our fitness focus is ‘Boot Camp’ allowing the children to understand how to prepare the body for a workout. Our health focus is ‘Healthy body- Inside and Out’ focusing on the human skeleton and how it allows us to move.
