Matilda- Roald Dahl
Despite being born into a family that dismisses and mistreats her, Matilda is exceptionally gifted, with a love for reading and an intellect far beyond her years. She possesses extraordinary abilities, including telekinesis, which she uses to overcome various challenges. Matilda's journey is one of resilience, cleverness, and a quest for justice, culminating in her ultimate triumph over the oppressive forces in her life, including her neglectful parents and the tyrannical headmistress, Miss Trunchbull. With the support of her kind-hearted teacher, Miss Honey, Matilda finds a loving environment where her talents can truly flourish.
To explore the text further, our genre coverage will be a setting description and character description of Matilda and Crunchem Hall. We will then move onto writing to entertain by creating a play-script, which the children will then perform.

Geography/ History
History- The Ancient Egyptians – What were the achievements of the Ancient Egyptians?
For our History focus, the children will become historians and identify the reasons why the Ancient Egyptians are considered a successful civilisation. The children will understand the different types of evidence that can be used to reach conclusions about the Ancient Egyptian way of life, using their disciplinary skills to assist. They will also use sources and artefacts to reach conclusions about the Ancient Egyptian people through studying the pyramids.
Science
Sound
Our Science focus for this half term is sound. The children will be identifying how sounds are made and recognising that vibrations from sound travel through the medium to the ear. We will also look at patterns in sound comparing pitch and volume. We will also be working scientifically throughout all of our science lessons, by conducting different experiments.
Educational Visit
Ancient Egyptian workshop
The children will experience an Ancient Egyptian workshop. During the course of the workshop, the children will get the chance to meet the world famous Egyptologist Trimbold. Trimbold explains about life in ancient time and will mummify one of the pupils whilst acting out the daily life of an Ancient Egyptian priest. He will also tell the story of the uncovering of Tutankhamen’s Tomb and the pupils will get the chance to meet an Ancient Egyptian tomb robber.
PSHE/RSE/ RE
PSHE/RSE – What strength and skills do we have?
This half term, the children will understand how to recognise personal qualities and individuality, whilst developing their self-worth by identifying positive things about themselves and their achievements. We will discuss and celebrate our achievements and explore how these attributes and achievements may make us feel, understanding our own personal attributes, strengths, skills and interests contribute to their self-esteem. Then, we will look at setting goals for ourselves and discuss how to manage our emotions and actions when there are set-backs, learning from our mistakes and reframe unhelpful thinking.
RE - What do Hindus believe that God is like? (Brahman/atman)
During RE lessons, our focus will be on Hinduism, identifying some Hindu deities and explaining how they help Hindus describe God. The children will make links between the Hindu idea of everyone having a ‘spark’ of God in them and ideas about the value of people in the world today, giving good reasons for their ideas. They will also make simple links between beliefs about God and how Hindus live (e.g. choosing a deity and worshiping at a home shrine; celebrating Diwali) and identify some different ways in which Hindus worship. As a class, we will raise questions through discussions and suggest answers about whether it is good to think about the cycle of create/preserve/destroy in the world today.
Art/ D & T/ Music
Art – Our artist focus is Leonardo Da Vinci
We will be studying the artist Leonardo Da Vinci, creating realistic portrait paintings and drawings by using shading and hatching to complete art in the style of Leonardo Da Vinci. We will create our own artwork using light and colour to convey mood.
D&T – Our focus is Mechanics- Light
Within our design and technology lessons, we will be identifying the difference between electrical and electronic products. Firstly, we will evaluate a range of existing lights and their features then develop a new functional light using a circuit. Finally, we will evaluate ideas and products against a given success criteria.

Spanish
Numbers 11-20 and Greetings
This half term, we will be saying and repeating numbers from 11-20 and counting to 20 independently in Spanish. With our partners, we will be orally rehearsing and writing different greetings, asking how people are and revisiting hello and goodbye in Spanish. We will continue to broaden our vocabulary and understanding by using a dictionary.
PE day
Our Sport topic is ‘Invaders’ which involves keeping possession of the ball and using ABC (agility, balance and coordination) to keep control of a ball in a competitive situation. Our fitness focus is ‘Boot Camp’ allowing the children to understand how to prepare the body for a workout. Our health focus is ‘Healthy body- Inside and Out’ focusing on the human skeleton and how it allows us to move.
