From the moment Mary Poppins arrives at Number Seventeen Cherry-Tree Lane, everyday life at the Banks house is forever changed.
It all starts when Mary Poppins is blown by the east wind onto the doorstep of the Banks house. She becomes a most unusual nanny to Jane, Michael, and the twins. Who else but Mary Poppins can slide up banisters, pull an entire armchair out of an empty carpetbag, and make a dose of medicine taste like delicious lime-juice cordial? Geography - Rivers and the Water Cycle; How does the water go round and round?
During geography lessons, we will focus on human and physical geography discussing the land part of the water cycle using geographical vocabulary and the sky (atmosphere’s) role in the water cycle. We will learn about a major UK river – the River Thames – and follow a river from source to mouth. We will explore the ways in which people use and change some of the world’s major rivers and create a model river or stream to see how changes in water flow affect it.
As part of our geographical fieldwork, we will use the zoom function of a digital map to locate places including UK rivers.

Electricity
We will continue our Science focus on electricity, recognising that a switch opens and closes a circuit and associate this with whether or not a lamp lights in a simple series circuit. We will also recognise some common conductors and insulators, and associate metals with being good conductors.

We will explore the reservoir and discuss human and physical geography as we explore the local area. We will use our geographical vocabulary to reinforce our knowledge of the lands role in the water cycle.

This half term, we will discuss how to recognise, predict, assess and manage risk in different situations. We will know how to keep safe in the local environment and less familiar locations (e.g. near rail, water, road; fire/firework safety; sun safety and the safe use of digital devices when out and about.) Children will understand how people can be influenced by their peers’ behaviour and by a desire for peer approval; recognising how to manage this influence.
Children will understand how people’s online actions can impact on other people and we will know how to keep safe online, including managing requests for personal information and recognising what is appropriate to share or not share online. We will know how to report concerns, including about inappropriate online content and contact
RE - How and why do people mark the significant events of life?
During RE lessons, children will identify some beliefs and make simple links about love, commitment and promises in two religious traditions; describing what they mean and how people live (e.g. through celebrating forgiveness, salvation and freedom at festivals.) We will offer informed suggestions about the meaning and importance of ceremonies of commitment for religious and non-religious people today, describing what happens in ceremonies of commitment (e.g. baptism, sacred thread, marriage) and say what these rituals mean. We will raise questions and suggest answers about whether it is good for everyone to see life as a journey, and to mark the milestones and give good reasons why we think ceremonies of commitment are or are not valuable today.

Within design and technology lessons, we will be building a car chassis. We will design a shape that reduces air resistance and investigate and analyse a range of existing products. We will make a model based on a chosen design and assemble and test our completed product. Finally, we will evaluate ideas and products against a given success criteria.

This half term, we will name fruits and vegetables, recognise and use masculine and feminine nouns and give our own opinion of a fruit and vegetables, including giving a negative opinion of fruit and vegetables. Stig of the Dump by Clive King
Barney is a solitary eight-year-old, given to wandering off by himself. One day he is lying on the edge of a disused chalk-pit when he tumbles over and lands in a sort of cave. He meets somebody with a lot of shaggy hair and two bright black eyes' - wearing a rabbit-skin and speaking in grunts. He names him Stig. They learn to understand one another, and together they raid the rubbish dump at the bottom of the pit, improve Stig's cave dwelling, and enjoy a series of adventures.

Geography - Earthquakes and Volcanoes - How does the earth shake, rattle and roll?
For our Geography focus, we will develop an understanding of the causes, outcomes and location of earthquakes and volcanoes. We will aim to understand the distribution of earthquakes and volcanoes, and to know where the world’s most active earthquake and volcanic zone is today. We will discover why people live in the vicinity of volcanoes, and what measures can be taken to make life safer in earthquake zones. Children will be provided with the opportunity to investigate recent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions and the associated issues.

For our Science focus, we will identify common appliances that run on electricity and construct a simple series electrical circuit, identifying and naming its basic parts, including cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers.
We will identify whether or not a lamp will light in a simple circuit, based on whether or not the lamp is part of a complete loop with a battery. We will bring Science to life during our day visit exploring the museum. We will take part in an electrifying Science show linked to our Science learning for this half term and take part in exciting hands on activities throughout the day.

Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson
Maia, an orphan, can’t wait to reach her distant relatives a thousand miles up the Amazon. She imagines a loving family with whom she will share great adventures. Instead she finds two spiteful cousins who see the jungle as the enemy and refuse to go outdoors. But the wonders of the rainforest more than make up for the hideous Carters and when Maia meets a mysterious boy who lives alone on a wild river shores, she begins a spectacular journey to the heart of an extraordinary new world.
Within our English lessons will be writing to entertain in the form of a narrative and writing to persuade in the form of a Non-chronological report. We will also focus on the poetry style Tetractys.

Kaspar Prince of Cats – Michael Morpurgo
Kaspar Prince of Cats tells the story of Johnny Trott, a bellboy at the Savoy, who makes friends with a cat named Kaspar. They have many adventures, including being on board the Titanic when it hits an iceberg. Together, they explore the ship, facing challenges and hiding secrets along the way.
To explore the text further our genre coverage will be writing to inform, writing a newspaper report. We will then move onto writing a diary entry.

This half term in maths, the children will begin the half term focusing on perimeter and length. The children will be calculating the perimeter of rectilinear shapes and finding missing measurements. The children will then move onto fractions. In this topic they will convert, add and subtract fractions. They will also learn about equivalent and improper fractions.

Roman Britain
Was the Roman invasion good or bad for Britain?
For our history focus, the children will be exploring the history of Roman Britain as they travel back in time. The children will understand reasons behind the Roman invasion and reach valid conclusions on whether Roman roads were a positive development. They will also use artefacts and research to decide which Roman development has the greatest significance today.

States of matter
In Science this half term, the children will be comparing and grouping different materials according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases. They will experiment some materials and observe the change of state when materials are heated or cooled, measuring the temperature at which this happens. The children will also identify the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle.

Deva Roman Experience
The children will be transported back to the time of the Romans, where they will travel across the sea to the North of Britannia, to the Roman Fortress of Deva!
Once they have arrived and boarded a ship the children will learn why the Romans invaded Britain and built the fortress of Deva and what it was like to live in Chester as a Roman Soldier nearly 2000 years ago. There will be ports to explore, streets to walk down, a hospital, a Roman bath, an amphitheatre and plenty of hands-on activities.

The children will be using their knowledge from History, to create Roman structures in design and technology. They will be following the process of designing, creating and evaluating their model, ensuring that they have added cladding to a frame structure to add different effects.

Reading this classic children's story, we will follow Mole, who ventures from his underground home to the outside world where he meets Ratty. Mole and Ratty’s relationship blossoms into a heart-warming friendship, as they embark on adventures and meet other characters such as Badger and Toad. We will discuss and examine how Mole, Ratty, and Badger try to help Mr. Toad, when he finds himself in trouble following his obsession with the latest trend – motorcars! Within our English lessons, we will be writing a narrative to entertain and a letter to persuade.

The Americas - Can you come on a great American road trip?
For our Geography focus, we will use the eight points of the compass, with an atlas, map and/or Google™ Earth, to locate cities in the continent of North America, and to discover something about some of these cities and their states. We will discover something about South American regions, countries and cities, and improve knowledge about the differences between continent, country and city. Children will research some countries and cities in North and South America, and identify similarities and differences; naming, locating and describing some of the main environmental regions of North and South America. Children will also research the historic Route 66 and some of the cities it went/goes through, before ending our Geography focus by developing our speaking and listening skills through creating a presentation to demonstrate and explain our knowledge.

This half term, we will understand how people’s behaviour affects themselves and others, knowing how to respond to aggressive or inappropriate behaviour (including online and unwanted physical contact) and how to report concerns. Children will understand how to model being polite and courteous in different situations and recognise the respectful behaviour they should receive in return. We will discuss the relationship between rights and responsibilities; understanding about the right to privacy and how to recognise when a confidence or secret should be kept (such as a nice birthday surprise everyone will find out about) or not agreed to and when to tell (e.g. if someone is being upset or hurt.) We will discuss the rights that children have and why it is important to protect these.

History- The Ancient Egyptians – What were the achievements of the Ancient Egyptians?
For our History focus, the children will become historians and identify the reasons why the Ancient Egyptians are considered a successful civilisation. The children will understand the different types of evidence that can be used to reach conclusions about the Ancient Egyptian way of life, using their disciplinary skills to assist. They will also use sources and artefacts to reach conclusions about the Ancient Egyptian people through studying the pyramids.

Sound
Our Science focus for this half term is sound. The children will be identifying how sounds are made and recognising that vibrations from sound travel through the medium to the ear. We will also look at patterns in sound comparing pitch and volume. We will also be working scientifically throughout all of our science lessons, by conducting different experiments.

Ancient Egyptian workshop
The children will experience an Ancient Egyptian workshop. During the course of the workshop, the children will get the chance to meet the world famous Egyptologist Trimbold. Trimbold explains about life in ancient time and will mummify one of the pupils whilst acting out the daily life of an Ancient Egyptian priest. He will also tell the story of the uncovering of Tutankhamen’s Tomb and the pupils will get the chance to meet an Ancient Egyptian tomb robber.

This half term, the children will understand how to recognise personal qualities and individuality, whilst developing their self-worth by identifying positive things about themselves and their achievements. We will discuss and celebrate our achievements and explore how these attributes and achievements may make us feel, understanding our own personal attributes, strengths, skills and interests contribute to their self-esteem. During RE lessons, our focus will be on Hinduism, identifying some Hindu deities and explaining how they help Hindus describe God. The children will make links between the Hindu idea of everyone having a ‘spark’ of God in them and ideas about the value of people in the world today, giving good reasons for their ideas. They will also make simple links between beliefs about God and how Hindus live (e.g. choosing a deity and worshiping at a home shrine; celebrating Diwali) and identify some different ways in which Hindus worship. As a class, we will raise questions through discussions and suggest answers about whether it is good to think about the cycle of create/preserve/destroy in the world today.

This half term, we will be saying and repeating numbers from 11-20 and counting to 20 independently in Spanish. With our partners, we will be orally rehearsing and writing different greetings, asking how people are and revisiting hello and goodbye in Spanish. We will continue to broaden our vocabulary and understanding by using a dictionary.
PE day
Our PE Day will be on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Our Sport topic is ‘Invaders’ which involves keeping possession of the ball and using ABC (agility, balance and coordination) to keep control of a ball in a competitive situation. Our fitness focus is ‘Boot Camp’ allowing the children to understand how to prepare the body for a workout. Our health focus is ‘Healthy body- Inside and Out’ focusing on the human skeleton and how it allows us to move.
