Summer 2

For the love of reading text


In Literacy, we will be focusing on the text ‘The Tiger who came to Tea’. We are very excited to act out the story and learn about the different characters. We will develop our understanding when we answer comprehension questions about the text and our writing development will continue when we draw the characters and write character descriptions. We will even write our own story map and letter invitation once we have sequenced the story!

White Rose Maths


This half term we will be solving real life problems to 5 using key vocabulary linked to sharing, adding and taking away. We will create different compositions to 5 investigating patterns with adding. We will learn how to create a map and describe a familiar route. We will also learn how to extend a repeating pattern and create our very own. Finally, we will be comparing groups of objects that have more, less and fewer plus writing numerals to 5 and beyond.

Geography/ History/ Understanding the World


This half term we will be learning about the world and how we can make it a better place. We will research where endangered animals and zoo animals are originally from. Through our topic work we will compare and contrast two different environments such as a forest and desert and say which we would prefer to live and why.


Science / Understanding the World


This half term we will be keeping a log of the weather and comment on our observations. We will also research a variety of different animal habitats and create representations of them.

Educational Visit


Chester Zoo
During our visit to Chester Zoo we will visit many animals especially the tigers which links fantastically to our Literacy learning. We will learn lots of facts about these amazing creatures see how they live up close.


PSHE/RSE/ RE /PSED


During PSED we will continue to identify emotions and discuss how we feel moving on into the Reception Class. We will become more aware of other children around and the choices that they make and in turn, we will increase our awareness of the need to follow simple rules. We will continue to interact with others and increase our confidence in the school setting including asking for help.


Art/ D & T/ Music/ EAD


We will be learning how to mix colours and see what happens when we do this. We will continue to use different media to create different representations of animals and habitats.

Summer 1

For the love of reading text


In literacy we will be focusing on ‘Old McDonald’ and recognising the rhyming words we can hear. Continuing on from our learning in the Spring term we will be focusing on character and setting description learning lots of new vocabulary in order to make our descriptions more exciting. Our knowledge of phonics will continue to grow as we learn new sounds and practice blending cvc words.

White Rose Maths


This half term we will be learning all about positional language and give instructions for someone to follow. We will then extend our learning by moving beyond 5 up to 10 by counting, ordering and subitising. To consolidate our learning we will then be putting it to the test will some real life problem solving including using money.

Geography/ History/ Understanding the World


This half term we will be exploring our local environment to recognise features such as churches and different types of houses as well as using images to examine how things change over time.

Science / Understanding the World


In science we will be learning how to take care of animals and living things. We will be planting seeds and also visiting the school farm to learn how to care for the animals.

PSHE/RSE/ RE /PSED


In PSED we will be continuing to build on our self-regulation skills by being aware of how others are feeling and learning to empathise. We will also grow our confidence by talking about what we are doing and show resilience when faced with new challenges.

Art/ D & T/ Music/ EAD


In expressive arts we will be focusing more on producing our own ideas this half-term by creating collages using materials to represent objects and create spaces/small world areas using shapes and lines for defined areas. We will continue our discovery of musical instruments by exploring some new instruments and interpreting their sound.

Spellings/ Reading


Each week our spellings and reading will directly link to the sounds we are teaching during phonics. We may repeat some spellings or reading books to allow children to confidently apply the phonics they have learnt.
This half term we will be focusing on developing phase 2 phonological awareness by blending cvc words together and learning tricky words “I”, “and”, “the”, “to” “is” “go”.

Spring 2

In Literacy, we will be focusing on ‘Humpty Dumpty’ and ‘Jack and Jill’. We are very excited to sing and act out these rhymes. We will develop our understanding when we answer comprehension questions about the rhymes and our writing development will continue when we draw the characters and write character descriptions. We will even write our own storyboard once we have sequenced the rhyme!

This half term we will be exploring 2D and 3D shapes including comparing them and describing them, using key vocabulary linked to sides and corners. We will then use our super understanding of shapes to create our very own Humpty! Finally, we will be developing our mastery of number to 5 when we count, explore numerals and dig deep in to the composition of 4 and 5.

Understanding the world -Geography/ History


This half term we will be taking an interest in significant individuals including King Charles and we will be considering passages of time when we discuss family routines.

Understanding the world -Science


This half term we will be taking part in a science experiment when we consider what might happen when a Humpty egg falls off the wall! We will investigate what happens when we cook an egg and observe the changes.

Educational Visit


Wonderland Telford
During our visit to Wonderland, we will be meeting lots of different nursery rhyme characters in their setting and learn new rhymes. Visiting Wonderland links to our English topic.

We will be naming colours and experiment with applying paint with a large brush. We will learn different techniques when painting including ‘dab’, ‘splodge’ and ‘sweep’!

Spring 1

People who help us

During this half term we will be immersing ourselves in the story “Topsy and Tim go to the Doctors”.

We will be sitting and listening to the story, talking in full sentences about the characters.

For maths this half term we will begin to exploring size height and length . Then we will explore the meaning of more and fewer and finally forming the numbers 1,2 and 3.

Autumn 2

Winter Woolies

During this half term we will be immersing ourselves in the story "One Snowy Night".

We will be sitting and listening to the story, talking in full sentences about the characters. We will also be creating a snowy setting discussing what we see.

For maths this half term we will begin to explore numbers through nursery rhymes singing together and discovering numbers through songs. Then we will explore numbers to 3, counting one item at a time. Finally we will be exploring shapes, discussing how they feel and finding shapes in the environment.

Autumn 1

All about me and the world we live in

During this half term as we open our nursery gates, we will be ensuring that all children become settled, confident and aware of the routines and expectations within the setting. As we focus more on our topic 'All About Me and the World we Live in', we will be talking about ourselves, our families and getting to know our peers. The children will use all of their senses in hands-on exploration of natural materials. They will explore collections of materials with similar and/or different materials and they will be exposed to a wide range of new vocabulary to discuss what we have learnt. The children will also begin to make sense of their own life story and family’s history when we discuss who we live with. We will also discuss our friends’ family units and develop positive attitudes about the differences between people. The children will be immersed into the text of 'Elmer' where they will engage in imaginative role play as they take on the role of the characters. The children will be introduced to print, and we will identify some initial sounds in the story. In mathematics the children will be introduced to numbers to 5 through a variety of counting and number songs.
