Paddington Bear- Thomas Michael Bond The Paddington Bear books have been a family favourite for many years and the children will certainly enjoy reading all about this loveable bear. They will show of their range of writing skills during story writing lessons, sequencing and retelling the story. The children will also be writing instructions to help Paddington make his infamous marmalade toast.

Number – Place value within 100: In this unit we will deepen the children’s understanding of numbers up to 100 by helping them grasp the concept of place value, enabling them to partition numbers into tens and ones, compare and order numbers and understand the relationship between numbers.
Measurement – Money and time: This unit introduces the children to the concept of money, emphasising recognition of coins and notes, counting in coins and solving simple problems. They will also learn how to tell the time to the hour and half hour, understand time intervals and sequencing daily events.
Geography/ History
History – Great Inventions In this History unit, the children will be investigating great inventions such as the first telephone invented by Alex Bell, the first four wheeled automobile invented by Karl Benz and the first successful powered aeroplane invented by the Wright Brothers. We will use sources to compare similarities and differences between these inventions from the past and present.
Science
Seasonal Change. We will observe changes across all four seasons understanding how day length varies.

Canalside Farm – Fruit Picking
PSHE/RSE/ RE
PSHE – How we can look after each other and the world? We will discuss how kind and unkind behaviour can affect others. We will know how to look after and treat animals and why it is important to look after the word we live in. We will focus on change and how we grow up and adapt to different changes around us, in particular our transition to year 2.
RE –How should we care for the world and others and why does it matter? We will identify a story or text that says God loves all people and think about how we care for others. We will then give examples of how and why Christians and Jews show care for the world.
Art/ D & T/ Music
Art – Henri Rousseau We will be focusing on observing patterns and exploring a variety of textures to create our final piece of art in the style of the artist.
DT – Making a moving story book (Mechanisms) We will explore slider mechanisms and the movement they output, to design, make and evaluate a class moving storybook to present and share with the Nursery children.
Music – Reflect, Rewind and Replay! This Unit of Work consolidates the learning that has occurred during the year. All the learning is focused around revisiting songs and musical activities, a context for the History of Music and the beginnings of the Language of Music.

Summer 1

The Jolly Postman by Allan Ahlberg and Janet Ahlberg is a much-loved children's picture book that follows a postman as he delivers letters to a range of classic fairy-tale characters. Each page features a new delivery and includes an actual letter, card, or booklet that readers can take out and read. The book cleverly combines storytelling with interactive elements, encouraging children to engage with both traditional tales and different types of written communication, such as invitations, postcards, and advertisements. It’s a fun and imaginative journey through a familiar storybook world!

Number: Fractions Summer Block 1 - Children learn to recognise and find halves and quarters of shapes, objects, and quantities, using practical activities to develop a clear understanding of equal parts and simple fraction notation. Geometry: Position and Direction Summer Block 2 - In this unit the children learn to describe position, direction, and movement using language such as above, below, left, right, forwards, backwards, and to make whole, half, quarter, and three-quarter turns.
History
The Greatest People. In this History unit, the children will be focusing on three significant individuals: Florence Nightingale, Neil Armstrong and Christopher Columbus. We will be exploring why these individuals are significant and how they have contributed to international achievement. The children will be putting their historical heads on when they use sources to aid their learning, including non-fiction books, photographs and artefacts.
Science
Plants. In this unit we will be identifying and naming a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees. We will also closely observe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees. We will be becoming scientists when we observe changes over time of our very own plants!

Brampton Museum – Florence Nightingale Workshop

PSHE – What helps to keep us safe? We will be learning about different roles in the community who can help and keep us safe – the jobs they do and how they help people. We will be learning how to attract someone’s attention or ask for help, how to respond safely to adults they do not know and what to do if they feel unsafe or worried. Finally, this half term we will be covering how people, animals and indeed our environment need to be looked after and how we can do this. RE – Who is Jewish and how do they live? We will be recognising some of the words of the Shema as a Jewish prayer and know how Jewish ideas of God impact the lives of believers. We will find out how Jewish people remember God in different ways.

Old Bear – Jane Hissey
It’s time to bring Old Bear back to the playroom! Old Bear has been up in the attic for a very long time, but he hasn’t been forgotten. Bramwell Brown leads the toys on a rescue mission to bring their friend, Old Bear, safely back home. We will be focusing on a setting description and sequencing and retelling the story. We will also look at acrostic poems.

Geography – Let’s Take a Trip Overseas!
The children will explore and start to understand continents, places that are near/far and we will look at the UK in more detail. We will gain an understanding of north, south, east and west. We will look at the surrounding oceans and how Mali, Timbuktu (Africa) is similar and different to London using human and physical geography.
Science
Animals including Humans
We will be covering carnivores, omnivores and herbivores and identifying and naming specific animals that eat these food types. We are looking at the structure of these animals.

We will be carrying out workshops looking at animals and their habitats and what they eat. This links to our Science topic Animals including Humans.

PSHE – What can we do with money?
We will understand what money is, how it comes in different forms and begin to learn how money is obtained. We will also recognise how people make choices about what to do with money and the difference between needs/wants. Know how to keep money safe and list some of the different ways of doing this.
RE – Why does Easter matter to Christians?
We will be focusing on telling stories of Holy Week and Easter from the Bible and recognise that Incarnation and Salvation are part of a ‘big story’ of the Bible. We will look at how Christians show their beliefs about Jesus’ death and resurrection in church worship at Easter. Finally we will think, talk and ask questions about whether the story of Easter only has something to say to Christians, or if it has anything to say to pupils about sadness, hope or heaven.

We will design our own smoothie and select simple tools, use them appropriately and begin to evaluate the taste.

Spring 1

Jack and the Beanstalk by Ed Bryan. Jack climbs the stalk in hopes of finding food. He comes across a town among the clouds and is helped by a magic fairy to find a giant's castle (home to the giant who killed Jack's father). Jack eventually steals a magic hen and gold coins from the giant.

Children will continue to focus on addition and subtraction skills up to 20. They will then go on to learn about the place value of numbers up to 50.
Geography/History
Geography – Our local area: What is it like where we live? Children will explore the local area around us. We will be learning about where it is that we live in our country and city. We will also discuss the human and physical properties of Stoke-on-Trent. We will be able to draw on our skills and knowledge of the United Kingdom to locate Stoke-on-Trent on a map.
Science
Animals including humans. This half term we will be able to name and identify a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. We will also be able to compare the structure of these animals.
Educational Visit
Middleport Pottery. Year 1 will be able to immerse ourselves into our Geography topic of ‘Our local area’. We will explore the background of Stoke-on-Trent and just how talented the people of our local area are.
PSHE/RSE/RE
PSHE/RSE – What helps us stay healthy? This half term, we will explore what it means to be healthy – we will discuss the important people in our lives that can help us to be healthy for example, parents, teachers, doctors. We will begin to understand that what we put into our bodies will have an effect on how we will feel. We will understand how medicines will help us to be healthy and that some people need to take medicines every day in order to remain healthy.
RE – How should we care for the world and for others? And why does it matter? During this half term, we will be able to identify a story or text that says something about each person being unique and valuable. We will be able to give an example of a key belief that some people find in these stories, for example, that God loves all people. We will be able to give examples of how people show that they care for others e.g. by giving to charity. We will be able to give examples of how Christians and Jews can show care for the natural Earth.
Art/D&T/Music
Art – Our artist focus is Pablo Picasso. In year 1 we will explore the artist Pablo Picasso and observe his work. We will use a variety of drawing tools to create patterns after observing them. We will be able to develop impressed images whilst naming and understanding all colours and shades. We will go on to mix colours for a purpose and apply colour with a range of tools.
D&T – Our focus is Fruit and Vegetables. We will be able to identify if a food is a fruit or vegetable. We will start to identify where plants grow and which parts we eat. We are looking forward to tasting different fruits and vegetables to compare them. Finally, we will use all of this knowledge to make a fruit and vegetable smoothie.
Music – In the groove
PE day
Our PE Day will be on a Wednesday. This half term, year 1 will become Groovy Gymnastics. We will use our bodies to be able to balance. We will also link our PE learning with our PSHE to link in with our hygiene, health and medicines.
Spellings/Reading
Our spellings this half term will link in with our phonics phase. You will find our weekly spellings in our spelling diaries. We continue to aim to read with your child 5 times per week, we appreciate your cooperation with this at home too!
Autumn 2

Gingerbread Man – Miriam Latimer. The cheeky little gingerbread man is having so much fun! He scurries away from Mr. and Mrs. Baker and all the hungry animals, but then he meets a crafty fox… Will the gingerbread man meet a sticky end? The children will read the fairy tale story “The Gingerbread Man.” They will begin to develop their reading and writing skills through a variety of genres—including sequencing and retelling the events of the story. We will start to focus on time connectives (first, then, next, last).

Measurement – Addition and Subtraction, Shape, and Place Value. Focusing on 2D/3D shapes and counting within 20.
Geography/History
Geography – UK Adventures – What do you know about the UK cities and seas? This geography unit focuses on naming and locating the 4 countries of the United Kingdom. We will use maps and atlases to name capital cities and use aerial photographs to recognize UK landmarks. The children will name and locate the surrounding seas of the UK.
Science
Everyday Materials. We will be distinguishing between an object and the material from what it has been made. Year 1 will describe the simple properties of a variety of everyday materials and they will compare and group together a variety of everyday materials.

PSHE – Who is special to us? Year 1 will know that family is one of the groups they belong to, and they will know about the different people in their family. We will understand how families are all different but share common features and what our families do to make us feel loved and cared for.
RE – Why does Christmas matter to Christians? We will recognize that stories of Jesus’ life come from the Gospels, and Year 1 will give a clear, simple account of the story of Jesus’ birth and why Jesus is important for Christians. We will also give examples of ways in which Christians use the story of the Nativity to guide their beliefs and actions at Christmas.

Art – Andy Goldsworthy. We will be constructing a piece of art in the style of Andy Goldsworthy and learn how to carve, roll, and pinch coils using a modeling medium. We will also look at making simple joins and create patterns using a variety of mediums.
DT – Constructing a dream house (structure). We will look at individual preferences and requirements in designs of houses, and we will make a stable structure of a dream house. We will assemble the components of structures, and the children will evaluate their projects and adapt their designs.

What was it like when our grandparents were children?
The children will explore similarities and differences between their own lives and those of people their grandparents’ age. We will focus on different topics, including homes, toys, shops and schools.

We will be identifying, naming and labelling basic parts of the body. We will also focus on the different sense – sight, touch, taste, hearing and smell. We will look at which body part links to this specific sense.

Recognise how the ‘Creation’ story can fit with the ‘big story’ of the Bible and we will say what the creation story tells Christians about God, Creation and the world.
