Journey to Jo’Burg:
When their baby sister suddenly becomes very sick, Naledi and Tiro know that they need to bring their mother back in order to save their sister’s life. Bravely, secretly, they set off on the long journey to the big city to find Mma.

Children will learn where the everyday materials, which their uniforms are made out of – come from. Additionally, children will understand what importing and exporting mean and they’ll gain knowledge of why trade is important between countries.

‘Properties and change of materials’.
Children will learn how to identify, classify and group materials based on their properties. Children will also learn how to create a solution, as well as recover substances from a mixture. Finally, children will learn what constitutes a reversible and irreversible change.

Street Child:
The unforgettable tale of an orphan in Victorian London, based on the boy whose plight inspired Dr Barnardo to found his famous children’s homes. When his mother dies, Jim Jarvis is left all alone in London.
He is sent to the workhouse but quickly escapes, choosing a hard life on the streets of the city over the confines of the workhouse walls. Struggling to survive, Jim finally finds some friends… only to be snatched away and made to work for the remorselessly cruel Grimy Nick, constantly guarded by his vicious dog, Snipe. Will Jim ever manage to be free?
Children will learn how to ‘write to inform’ by writing an information text and ‘write to persuade’ by creating an advert/leaflet for Blist Hill – Victorian Town

Spring 2

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
Children will immerse themselves in the wizarding world of Harry Potter. They will read the first of the Harry Potter books before writing their own biographies about the famous author ‘JK Rowling’ and writing their own narratives all about this book. They will even explore some magic themed poetry before having a go at writing their own.

Geography/ History
‘The Alpine Region’
children learn about the Alpine region of Europe, how the Alps were formed and how homes are adapted to the climate. The children will create a storyboard or digital book on mountain formation, design an Alpine home, and produce literature for visitors to the area using geographical vocabulary.
Science
‘Living Things & Their Habitats’
Children will learn about the different life cycles of certain animals, comparing them to one another. Children will also learn about reproduction and how this differs across different species of animals as well as plants.

Spring 1
Changes in Our Local Environment: How is the UK changing?
Cosmic is our 'Love for Reading' text it allows the children to fully comprehend what space is like and what is contained in our solar system. During our English lessons we will look at a range of figurative and descriptive language in order to write our own adventure narrative set in space. We will also explore what an explanation text is and how to write one.
During our Geography unit, the children will find out about the regions of the UK, discovering how some of these areas have changed over time. The children will research how specific areas of the UK have been affected by change, before conducting a fieldwork activity on their own area, writing a magazine article and working towards their Big Finish!
Autumn 2
The Vikings
Our second topic for the Autumn Term will be ‘Narnia -The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe’. Within our English lessons we will be looking closely at the Narnia Chronicles; written by C.S Lewis. We will be describing the characters that he created and the magical world through the wardrobe. We will also look at journalistic writing.
In Mathematics, we will continue to build upon our mathematical skills including looking at telling the time and also solving a variety of number problems; from subtracting and dividing to interpreting statistics. During our Science lessons, we will be comparing materials and looking at all of their different properties.
In History, we will be looking at The Vikings and how they settled in England. We will be answering our key question which is ‘would the Vikings do anything for money?
Autumn 1
The Anglo-Saxons: Was the Anglo-Saxon period really a Dark Age?
In this unit, the children will learn about the world of the Anglo-Saxons. They will consider why they came to Britain and whether the period deserves to be called the ‘Dark Ages’. Children will examine archaeological evidence, such as the Sutton Hoo ship burial and the Staffordshire hoard, while using written evidence from the time, including Beowulf, to provide context for the archaeological finds. They will learn about the importance of archaeological evidence and the work of the archaeologist, as well as the accidental finds of metal detectorists.
