‘The Light House Keepers Lunch’
This half term we will be focusing on ‘The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch’. We will look at acting out the story, taking on the role of the characters and discussing how they may feel. We will build on our previous writing skills and create character descriptions and setting descriptions, as well as looking at writing the story.
White Rose Maths
In Maths we will continue to build our number skills ready for year 1, looking at sharing and odd and even sharing. We will be creating our own patterns, describing positions and giving instructions to build.
Geography/ History / Understanding the World
History/Geography
We will be looking at transport in the past and present and how it has changed over time. We will also create our own maps and continuing to look at different landscapes such as the seaside.
Science / Understanding the world
Weather
This half term we will be looking at the beach environment. We will be using key vocabulary such as beach, sea, sand, crab and shell.
Educational Visit
We will be visiting New Brighton beach. Spending time exploring the beach and looking at the lighthouse.
PSHE/RSE/RE/PSED
We will be looking at the feelings of others, and why we need to consider how others may feel. We will be talking about our own feelings and preparing for year 1.
Art/ D & T/ Music/ EAD
In Reception we will be developing our artist skills and creating our own modes of transport. We will use a variety of materials, ranging from clay to lego bricks, experimenting with what works best and why.

Spellings/ Reading
Each week our spellings and reading will directly link to the sounds we are teaching during phonics. We may repeat some spellings or reading books to allow children to confidently apply the phonics they have learnt.
This half term we will be focusing on applying phase 4. We will also be sending home some guided reading ideas for you each week.
Summer 1

‘Little Red Riding Hood’
This half term we will be focusing on ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. We will look at the different parts of the story and sequence the images, we will then look at story retell. This will be done through drama and taking on the role of the characters then we will write the story ourselves.
White Rose Maths
In Maths we will be look at numbers beyond 10. We will look at sequencing them, recognising the numeral and the quantity and being to add and take numbers away. In shape we will look at 3D shapes and patterns in the environment.
Geography/ History / Understanding the World
History
This half term we will continue to embed the key skills and words we have been learning throughout the year, past, present and future. We will be looking at artefacts, looking at castles and houses and how they have changed over time.
Science / Understanding the world
Weather
This half term we will be looking at the weather and how it has changed over the year. What does summer weather look like? How is it different to Autumn? We will be exploring different weather from around the world too.

PSHE/RSE/RE/PSED
We will continue to develop our personal, social and emotional development this half term, focusing on confidence and facing our fears. We will look at what it means to be brave, looking at characters from stories.
Art/ D & T/ Music/ EAD
In Reception we will be developing our artist skills and creating our own landscape setting. Children will have the opportunity to select their own materials and resources to create their own masterpiece.

This half term we will be focusing on the applying phase 3 sounds consistently and confidently and beginning to introduce phase 4 sounds.
Spring 2

‘Little Red Hen’
We will be learning all about the Little Red Hen, the other animals the hen has on the farm, the process of baking bread and how it is important to be kind and helpful to others.
During this topic we will look at acting out the story, applying our phonics skills and reading sentences about the Little Red Hen and writing to describe the Hen and the Farm.
White Rose Maths
In Maths we will continue to develop our number skills and be looking at ‘9’ and ‘10’. We will begin by finding the numbers, representing the numbers and move onto looking at compositions of the numbers.
Understanding the world -Geography/ History
History
This half term we will be exploring farming and how it has changed over the years. We will be looking at the role of farmers now, the equipment they use and the animals they care for and why. We will be comparing that to farming in the past. In reception we will be focusing on vocabulary such as, past and present.
Understanding the world -Science
Life Cycle of a Duck
In Reception we will be observing our duck eggs, looking at how they are kept warm and what they need to hatch safely. We will take care of the ducklings when they hatch and looking at what they need to grow into ducks, which we will care for on our farm.
Educational Visit
Amerton Farm
During our visit to Amerton Farm we will be looking at the different animals in their care, how they look after them and what they need to grow. We will have a ride on the farms tractor and even get to feed some of the animals. Visiting Amerton Farm links to both our history and science topic.
PSHE/RSE/RE/PSED
During PSED we will be covering lots of aspects of personal care. We will be looking at dental hygiene, healthy foods, hand washing and why it is important to keep our hands clean after spending time on the farm.
Art/ D & T/ Music/ EAD
During expressive arts and design we will be designing and making props linking to our story, Little Red Hen. We will design then then use a variety of materials, such as foil, plastic, paper, net and cloth, to create the props we have designed.

This half term we will be focusing on the phase 3 sounds and tricky words ‘we’, ‘me’, ‘be’, ‘she’ and ‘he’.
Spring 1
Fantasy World
During this half term we will be immersing ourselves in fantasy stories. Our main story focus will the ’The Night Pirates’ by Peter Harris and Deborah Allwright.
In Literacy we will continue to build on our creative writing skills and applying our phonics to our writing.
In Maths we will be looking at mass and capacity and exploring how these are used every day. In number we will begin to introduce numbers above 5, looking at their compositions, representing them and counting them!
Autumn 2
The Gruffalo and Friends
During this half term we will be immersing ourselves in the story of the Gruffalo.
We will be looking at the sequence of the story, using vocabulary like first, next and then and begin to rewrite the story ourselves. Following this, we will write character descriptions for the mouse and Gruffalo and look at writing our own setting description.
For maths this half term we will begin to look at numbers to 5. First we will be identifying numbers to 5, then looking at compositions and subitising, We will also be looking at shape this half term, we will begin to identify and name 2D shapes and look at spotting them in the environment.
Autumn 1
CBeebies
During this half term our topic will be ‘CBeebies’. We will be looking at changes over time this half term, sequencing our school day, creating Autumnal pictures using natural materials and planting seeds, looking closely at what happens to them.
Our literacy lessons will start by focusing on the story, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.’ During these lessons we will look at retelling the story and writing character and setting descriptions.
In Reception our role play is a ‘Garden Centre’ where we will be exploring seeds and bulbs and how they change over time.
In maths we will be sorting and comparing different shapes and quantities and continuing to develop our knowledge of number and learning new skills.
