For the love of reading

In Literacy we will be learning all about ‘The Snail and the Whale’. The children will immerse themselves in the story and create their own story map. They will move on to letter and postcard writing, writing short sentences with known letter correspondences.

White Rose Maths

In Maths we will be exploring sharing and grouping. We will be looking at sharing objects with multiple groups of people. We will be looking at odd and even sharing up to 20 objects. We will begin to introduce the question ‘How many now?’ looking at adding more to an amount and taking some away.

Geography/ History / Understanding the World

In Geography we will be noticing features of the immediate environment and comparing them with previous environments (woodland a beach). In History we will be comparing transport from the past and the present, talking about the lives of people and how they have changed.

Science / Understanding the world

In Science we will be looking at recognising the signs of summer. We will be looking at the changing seasons and how the natural world changes.

PSHE/RSE/RE/PSED

We will be looking at relationships and meeting our new class teacher. We will be talking about the importance of a healthy diet and looking after ourselves. In RE we will be sharing special stories from different religions.

Art/ D & T/ Music/ EAD

In expressive arts and design we will be safely using and exploring a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function.

Spellings/ Reading

Each week our spellings and reading will directly link to the sounds we are teaching during phonics. We may repeat some spellings or reading books to allow children to confidently apply the phonics they have learnt. This half term we will be focusing on revising and consolidating phase 4.


Summer 1

For the love of reading

‘Little Red Riding Hood’ This half term we will be focusing on ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. We will look at the different parts of the story and sequence the images, we will then look at story retell. This will be done through drama and taking on the role of the characters then we will write the story ourselves.

White Rose Maths

In Maths we will be look at numbers beyond 10. We will look at sequencing them, recognising the numeral and the quantity and being to add and take numbers away. In shape we will look at 3D shapes and patterns in the environment.

Geography/ History / Understanding the World

This half term we will be identifying the similarities and differences between Antarctica and England. In History we will compare washing in the past and present.

Science / Understanding the world

In Summer 1 we will be planting seeds and watching them grow. We will carefully watch each stage and record their changes.

We will continue to develop our personal, social and emotional development this half term, focusing on confidence and facing our fears. We will look at what it means to be brave, looking at characters from stories.

Art/ D & T/ Music/ EAD

In Reception we will be developing our artist skills and creating our own landscape setting. Children will have the opportunity to select their own materials and resources to create their own masterpiece.

Spring 2

For the love of reading

‘The Little Red Hen’ - Exploring life on the farm and all the different jobs the busy Little Red Hen has to get done to make the bread! We will be using our problem-solving skills to help The Little Red Hen navigate the many jobs and tasks she must do and understanding how little help she has. This half term we will be using our phase 3 phonics to help us to write simple instructions on how to bake bread.

White Rose Maths

In Maths we will continue to use White Rose and their ‘small step’ ethos to help move our learning forward. We will continue to look at numbers beyond 8, representing them, finding one more and one less, looking at compositions of 9 and 10, and making arrangements of numbers to 10. By the end of the half term, we will be looking at 3D shapes and copying and continuing patterns too!

Geography/History/Understanding the World

This half term we will be describing a farm environment, looking at our school farm and visiting Amerton Farm too. We will be looking at farms over time, commenting on images of farming in the past and present, and looking at why things have changed over time.

Science/Understanding the World

Our science focus will be exploring the signs of Spring. We will be looking at how things have changed over the year and understanding the effect of changing seasons on the natural world around us. We will be looking at chicks, studying the life cycle and how they started as an egg and will grow into a chicken.

During PSED, we will be confident in trying new activities and showing independence, resilience, and perseverance in the face of challenge. We will discuss healthy food choices and how to keep our bodies fit and well. In RE, we will be answering the questions: why is Easter special to Christians, and what is the Easter story about?

Art/D&T/Music/EAD

This half term we will be exploring colour and mixing colour too. We will be selecting colours for a purpose and explaining these choices. We will be learning more songs and adding instruments to these songs when performing.

Spring 1

Whatever Next – Jill Murphy. Open the book to an exciting adventure that takes a little bear to exciting new places! We will be using our imaginations to follow baby bear on his adventure to the moon! This half term we will be using our phase 3 phonics to help us rewrite the story of ‘Whatever Next’.

White Rose Maths

In Maths we will continue to use White Rose and their ‘small step’ ethos to help move our learning forward. We will begin at looking numbers beyond 5, representing them, finding one more and one less and looking at odd and even pairs.

Geography/History/Understanding the World

This half term, in Geography, we will be looking at our immediate environment, using maps to navigate our way around the school and drawing our own maps too. In history we will be exploring how baths have changed over time, linking to our story ‘Whatever Next’.

Science/Understanding the World

This half term we will be looking at changes in the seasons. We will be looking for the signs of winter and how winter impacts the trees around school.

During PSED we will continue to develop our attention, following instructions throughout the school day. We will look at working collaboratively and sharing ideas with each other too. In RE we will be focusing on Christianity and answering questions such as, ‘Why is the word God special to Christians?’

Art/D&T/Music/EAD

During art and Design and Technology, we will be working collaboratively to create rockets, like from the story. Once complete we will be sharing our creations with our peers, talking about what we like and dislike. In music we will begin to sing different songs, either on our own or as a small group.

Autumn 2

For the love of reading

The Gruffalo – Julia Donaldson. Take a stroll through the deep dark woods, where we will meet a mouse just trying to enjoy a nut… but the woodland creatures have other ideas! We will be focusing on retelling the story orally, using our story maps to help us. In our writing, we will be creating character descriptions for the story characters; applying our phonics skills to write simple words and captions.

White Rose Maths

In Maths, we will continue to use White Rose and their ‘small step’ ethos to help move our learning forward. We will look at numbers to 5, confidently creating compositions, subitising, and using our prior knowledge to help us build on our skills of finding 1 more and 1 less of a given number to 5.

Geography/History/Understanding the World

This half term, we will be looking at our own personal history, sequencing pictures of us as babies and pictures of us now. We will be exploring changes in our local environment as the season changes. To understand the wider world, we will be talking about different countries, focusing on Antarctica and what we might find there.

Science/Understanding the World

We will begin to explore how things change when heated. This means only one thing… we need to bake a Gruffalo crumble! We will observe the ingredients before they are heated and compare this through observations. We will obviously have to taste the Gruffalo crumble too! We will also spend time exploring forces through floating and sinking; creating a raft to protect the owl from the Gruffalo!

PSHE/RSE/RE/PSED

During PSED, we will focus on looking after ourselves, especially practicing fastening our own coats—an important skill for the winter! We will also think about what makes us special and valuable. As we approach December, we will discuss why Christmas is special to Christians and reflect on people who are special to us. To celebrate SMSC day, we will learn about Remembrance Day.

This half term, we will explore different musical instruments and adapt the way we play them to create loud and quiet sounds. We will work together to create a large Gruffalo in a collaborative collage, considering the colors and textures we use. In dance sessions, we will watch performances and reflect on how they make us feel.

‘The Three Little Pigs’
We will be exploring The Three Little Pigs. We will spend time acting out the text, creating actions to help us remember the text, retelling the story and writing some character and setting descriptions. We will be using our phase 2 phonics to begin to write some simple words and captions.

White Rose Maths


In Maths we will be using White Rose and their ‘small step’ ethos. We will be matching and sorting, looking at different characteristics to categories, looking at measure and pattern and begin to look at number. We will be subitising, counting and matching numeral to quantity.

Geography/ History / Understanding the World


History focus
This half term we will be looking at past, present and future. We will be looking at our timetable, discussing what we did yesterday, what we are doing now and what we will be doing tomorrow.
Geography focus
We will be discussing where we live and some simple information about England. We will discuss how we can get to different place and the use of maps.

Looking at change
In Reception we will be planting seeds, looking at what happens to the soil when we add water to it and thinking about how to care for the seeds. We will spend time outside looking at the seasonal changes.
