For the love of reading text
Year 3 will be diving into the narrative based on the original story of Lewis Carroll as we explore the adventures of Alice. We look on as she follows the White Rabbit down a hole, soon discovering herself in the extraordinary world of Wonderland, where the magical adventure begins! To her amazement, it’s not long before Alice is attending an eccentric tea party and taking part in an odd game of croquet—all in the company of such mysterious and unforgettable characters. We will join Alice on her adventures as we write instructions and diary entries.
White Rose Maths
In Maths we will be focussing on shape, learning about the different types of angles and how to measure them accurately. We will then move onto a block of learning about Statistics. In this unit, we will draw our own pictograms and bar charts, before answering questions about the data.
Geography/ History
In our Geography unit this half term, we will learn about the coast of the British Isles. We will consider the advantages and the disadvantages of living by the coast, and how much the of the UK’s coast has changed. Throughout the topic, the children will be introduced to contrasting coasts from around the world and associated environmental issues, extending their coastal and locational knowledge.
Science
In this unit, we are going to be exploring forces and magnets and have lots of opportunities to become scientists! We will be carrying out investigations to find out whether magnets will attract or repel each other. We will also compare and classify materials based on whether or not they are attracted to a magnet.
Educational Visit
To support our Geography topic, we will be visiting Llandudno to learn more about the coast. It is also the home of Alice and Wonderland.
PSHE/RSE/ RE
During our PHSE lessons, we will be discussing the importance of keeping active and how it benefits our bodies and feelings. We will also explore the benefits of sleeping well and how the lack of sleep can affect the body.
In RE, we are going to be focussing on how and why do people try to make the world a better place.
Art/ D & T/ Music
Within DT, we will consider how the climate affects food growth and create a healthy nutritious recipe using seasonal vegetables available in the UK.
In Music, we will reflect, rewind and replay, revisiting the skills and songs that we have learned throughout Year 3.
We will continue our learning about the artist, Dan Mather. We will develop our understanding of mono-prints, mixing colours and using designing using ICT.
Spanish
In Spanish, we are going to be learning the different types of weather, matching spoken weather types to pictures and building our vocabulary and pronunciation skills.
PE day
In PE, we are going to focus on developing our striking and fielding skills, investigating different ways of throwing and when it is appropriate to use them, as well as practising the technique of catching a ball. We will then apply these skills to play team games.
Spellings/ Reading
Our spelling focus this half term is the letter ‘s’ spelt with ‘ci’ ‘ce’ and ‘cy’. We will also continue to practice spellings from the Year 3 list.
Summer 1
For the love of reading text
Our class text for this half term is The Accidental Prime Minister by Tom McLaughlin. When Joe tells a local news reporter exactly what he would do if he were the leader of the country, the video goes viral and Joe’s speech becomes famous all over the world! We will be writing adventure stories and a persuasive letter based on the events of the text.
White Rose Maths
In Maths we will be building on our previous knowledge on fractions by adding and subtracting them, as well as applying our reasoning skills to solve problems.
We will also be learning about adding and subtracting money to find change, before moving onto time. During this unit, we will explore periods of time such as days, months and years, as well as introducing roman numerals.
Geography/ History
This half term, we will focus on the history of our local area. In this unit, the children will investigate our local area and consider which buildings are of significance and should be preserved. They will conduct their own research to study local listed buildings and make links to historical events from the time of the building’s constructions, as well as to their prior knowledge. The Big Finish provides an opportunity for the children to consolidate their learning into a creative piece of work, illustrating what makes a building special.
Science
In this unit, we are going to be exploring forces and magnets and have lots of opportunities to become scientists! We will also compare and classify materials based on whether or not they are attracted to a magnet.

During our PHSE lessons, we will be discussing why it is important to eat well and to look after our teeth. We will explore the benefits of nutritionally rich foods and how not eating a balanced diet can affect health, including the impact of too much sugar on dental health.
In RE, we are going to be focussing on Islam and how festivals and worship show what matters to a Muslim.
Art/ D & T/ Music
Within DT, we will consider how the climate affects food growth and create a healthy nutritious recipe using seasonal vegetables available in the UK.
Our song for this half term is ‘Bringing Us Together’ which is a Disco song about friendship, peace, hope and unity.
We will begin learning about a new artist – Dan Mather. We will develop our understanding of relief and impressed printing, as well as completing mono-prints in the style of Dan Mather.
Spanish
In Spanish, we are going to be learning names of pets and engage in conversations surrounding this topic, building our vocabulary and pronunciation skills.
PE day
In PE, we are going to focus on developing our athletic skills, including running in different directions and applying these skills to relay racing. We will also recap previous learning on jumping and throwing accurately.
Spellings/ Reading
Our spelling focus this half term is homophones – two words that are pronounced the same way but spelt differently. We will also continue to practice spellings from the Year 3 list and explore words that use the suffix ‘ly’.
Spring 2
For the love of reading text
Whilst reading the modern day version of Macbeth, the children will discover whether the prediction of the three witches will come true for the King of Scotland. Are the witches correct when they say Macbeth will lose his throne?
Writing for the children will allow them to explore the life of William Shakespeare and create biographies of his life as well as writing their own play script.
White Rose Maths
In maths we will be focusing on fractions, recognising the numerator and denominator, ordering fractions and adding and subtracting fractions. We will also be learning about mass and capacity.
Problem solving and reasoning will remain a focus throughout all of our lessons.
Geography/ History
In an earlier unit, the children used several different representations of the world, or parts of it, without questioning them. In this unit, they will begin to understand the Earth better as a sphere, learning to rotate it mentally in 3-D. They will explore its representation in 2-D maps, and learn about the imaginary lines used (Equator, latitude, longitude, tropics and the International Date Line) to pinpoint global locations.
Science
In Science, we are going to begin by identifying the parts of a plant, their functions and what they require to grow. We will also begin to understand the importance of plants in the environment, how water is transported through a plant. Finally, we will focus on the pollination of plants and how seeds are dispersed to allow new plants to grow.
Educational Visit
We will attend Mary Arden’s farm in Stratford to bring Shakespearian times to life! We will enjoy a tour of Shakespeare’s home, learning what it was like to be a wealthy Tudor and how Tudors lived. We will also take part in a workshop and practice our quill writing, dress up as a Tudor and taste some of the sweet treats from the time.
PSHE/RSE/ RE
During our PHSE lessons, we will be discussing what makes a community, including different groups that we belong to, how communities can make everyone feel included and what is meant by a diverse community.
In RE, we are going to be focusing on Christianity and the Easter story, including why Christian’s call the day Jesus died Good Friday.
Art/ D & T/ Music
Within DT, we are exploring pneumatic systems and applying this understand to design and make our own pneumatic toy!
Our song for this half term is ‘The Dragon Song’ which is part of the folk genre.
We will continue our learning on the artist Paul Klee during our art lessons, and develop our understanding of positive and negative shapes, as well as practicing our sewing skills.

In Spanish, we are going to be learning names of colours and practice recalling these accurately.
PE day
Monday and Friday. In PE, we are going to focus on developing our ball skills, including throwing and catching, before applying these skills to various team games.

Our spelling focus this half term are word endings spelt ‘tion’ and ‘sion’. We will also continue to practice spellings from the Year 3 list and explore words that use the prefix ‘re’.
Spring 1
Which was more impressive - the Bronze Age or the Iron Age?
We have a fantastic and fun filled half term ahead of us in Year Three. Throughout our English sessions, we will be following the adventures of the Iron Man and writing our own mystery and suspense narratives based on the text.
During Maths, we will develop our skills in measurement and fractions. During our weekly Science lessons, our focus will be on light and shadows, securing our knowledge of why we need light in order to see objects and that darkness is the absence of light.
Our new History focus takes us back to the Bronze Age and Iron Age, comparing the two different periods of history, and will conclude with a ‘Dragon’s Den’ activity to persuade others to decide which historic invention was the most significant.
Autumn 2
The Stone Age
We have an exciting half term ahead of us in Year 3!
During our English lessons, we will be delving into the adventures of Phileas Fogg as he travels around the world in 80 days, before writing our own Non-Chronological Report and producing some fabulous poetry!
Our Maths sessions will be developing our knowledge of Multiplication and Division. We will be looking at equal groups and using arrays. We will focus on multiples of 2, 5 and 10 and how numbers can be shared and grouped. We will also be looking at multiplying and dividing by 3.
In Science, our knowledge of food and our bodies will be extended, thinking about Humans and Animals and how they need healthy diets to survive, as well as looking at bones and muscles.
Our new History topic focuses on how life changed for people during different periods of the Stone Age, including the Early, Middle and New Stone Ages. They will cover why the period was called the Stone Age, and what archaeological evidence there is from the period, particularly in the form of artefacts and monuments.
Autumn 1
Climate: Why is Climate Important?
We have an exciting half term ahead of us in Year 3! During our English lessons, we will be delving into the adventures of Charlie Bucket as he enters Mr Wonka’s fun-filled Chocolate Factory, before writing our own stories based on the text. Our Maths sessions will allow us to develop our understanding of place value and how to partition numbers into ones, tens and hundreds. In Science, our knowledge of rocks, soils and fossils will be extended, thinking about the different types of rocks and where fossils can be found. Our new Geography topic focuses on the importance of climate, looking at weather, polar climate, hot and dry places on earth and also all about biomes.
