In English Year 3 will be diving into the narrative Alice in Wonderland based on the original story by Lewis Carroll. Throughout the term we will explore the adventures of Alice. We look on as she follows a white rabbit down a hole, soon discovering herself in the extraordinary world of Wonderland, where the magical adventure begins. To her amazement, it’s not long before Alice is attending an eccentric tea party and taking part in an odd game of croquet—all in the company of such mysterious and unforgettable characters. We will join Alice on her adventures as we create adverts for a tea party and write a diary entry.
White Rose Maths
In Maths we will focus on shape and statistics. We will build on our understanding of the properties of 2D and 3D shapes and looking for angles in shapes. We will also begin to collect data, represent data in pictograms and bar graphs and interpret data.
Geography/ History
In our history unit ‘Our Local Area’, the children will investigate our local area and consider which buildings are of significance and which should be preserved. They will conduct their own research to study local listed buildings and make links to historical events from the time of the building’s constructions, as well as to their prior knowledge. The Big Finish provides an opportunity for the children to consolidate their learning into a creative piece of work, illustrating what makes a building special.
Science
In this unit, we are going to be exploring forces and magnets and have lots of opportunities to become scientists! We will be carrying out investigations to determine how things move on different surfaces, as well as finding out whether magnets will attract or repel each other. We will also compare and classify materials based on whether or not they are attracted to a magnet.
Educational Visit
Children will visit the wonderful ‘World of Wedgwood’ to make and paint their own glazed pencil pot. Whilst there, children will also go on a guided tour of the factory and learn about Josiah Wedgwood.
PSHE/RSE/ RE
During our PHSE lessons, we will be discussing why it is important to be active and sleep well. In RE, we are going to be focussing on how and why people try to make the world a better place.
Art/ D & T/ Music
Within DT, we will consider how the climate affects food growth and create a healthy nutritious recipe using seasonal vegetables available in the UK. Our song for this half term is ‘Bringing Us Together’ which is a Disco song about friendship, peace, hope and unity. We will begin learning about a new artist – Dan Mather. We will develop our understanding of relief and impressed printing, as well as completing mono-prints in the style of Dan Mather.
Spanish
In Spanish, we are going to be learning about ‘Weather’ and engage in conversations surrounding this topic, building our vocabulary and pronunciation skills.
PE day
Our PE lessons take place every Tuesday afternoon. In PE, we are going to focus on developing our throwing and catching skills, developing our strength and discussing our relationships with others.

Summer 1
For the love of reading
Our class text for this half term is The Accidental Prime Minister by Tom McLaughlin. When Joe tells a local news reporter exactly what he would do if he were the leader of the country, the video goes viral and Joe’s speech becomes famous all over the world! We will be writing adventure stories and a persuasive letter based on the events of the text.

In Maths we will focus on time. During this unit, we will explore periods of time such as days, months and years, as well as introducing roman numerals.
Geography/ History
In our Geography unit this half term, we will learn about the coast of the British Isles. We will consider the advantages and the disadvantages of living by the coast, and how much the of the UK’s coast has changed. Throughout the topic, the children will be introduced to contrasting coasts from around the world and associated environmental issues, extending their coastal and locational knowledge.
Science

Macbeth- Shakespeare
Children will be delving into the research of William Shakespeare and who he was as a writer as they create a Biography all about him. Moving on to playscripts and learning the skills to become their very own play writer.

In maths, we will be looking at Mass and Capacity as a new measurement and why we may need to use this. We will link this to every day and the units of measure we use for these. We will also be extending our previous knowledge and skills by focusing on Fractions. We will also be looking at Money and how this can help with every day life. Learning each penny to pounds and working out change from a large amount.
Geography/History
History- Iron and Bronze Age
Children will understand the importance of the improvements made by using bronze, use sources in order to find out about Bronze Age Life, compare home life in the Bronze Age and Iron Age, understand the dangers faced in Bronze and Iron Age Britain and reach an overall judgement comparing the Bronze Age to the Iron Age.
Science
Plants
Children will begin their learning all about plants. We will look at the different parts of a plant as a recap from year 2 and extend our knowledge further as to what each part is for and the purpose of this. We will then look into some experiments as to what plants need to grow and what would happen to plants if they did not consume what they needed to survive.
Educational Visit
Cresswell Craggs - Here the children will explore the Bronze and Iron Age and live thousands of years ago. They will experience what life was like and get involved in life as they know it. They will be challenged to make, explore and travel back in time to see exactly how far life has come to of that that they know of today.

PSHE/RSE-What makes a community?
Children will understand what is meant by the term community and what different communities they are involved in. They will also think about what a community means to them are how they make them feel.
RE- Why do Christians call the day Jesus died ‘Good Friday’?
Children will explore the Easter Story and the meaning behind the term ‘Good Friday’. They will think about why this is called ‘Good’ when something tragic happened and understand what Christians believe happened.
Art/D&T/Music
Art – Our artist focus is Paul Klee
In the style of Paul Klee, children will explore shade and colours, experiment with various pencils, close draw positive and negative shapes and use small eyed needles when sewing.
D&T – Our focus is Pneumatic Toys
We will begin by understanding how pneumatic systems work, design a toy that uses a pneumatic system and finally create a pneumatic system, assessing it against design criteria.
Music – The Dragon Song
Children will continue to learn to play the recorder weekly. They will also focus some of their music lessons on a new piece of music. This is music that is listened to all around the world and is a bit funky. This is a song about kindness, respect, friendship, acceptance and happiness.
Spanish
Colours
This half term, during our Spanish lessons, children will learn the colours of the rainbow in Spanish. This will be interactive through lots of games and colouring sessions for the children. As a challenge they may be able to incorporate this while completing their art lessons.
PE day
Within PE this term, we will develop our ball skills through team games and build on our skills working together. We will also be keeping ourselves fit and get those hearts pumping through some circuit challenges. Also, learning about our bodies and how they change through our childhood and how our bodies change when we exercise and what could happen if we do not exercise at all.

Light. Children will begin their learning surrounding light, recognising that they need light in order to see and that darkness is the absence of light. Children will also recognise that light is reflected from a surface and that light from the sun can be dangerous. Additionally, children will recognise that shadows are formed when an opaque object blocks the light whilst identifying patterns in the way that the size of shadows change.

Days and Months. This half term, during our Spanish lessons, children will learn to say the days of the week and the months of the year. Additionally, children will to order the days and months whilst also broadening vocabulary and understanding through different methods.
PE day
Within PE this term, we will develop our gymnastics skills by performing movements in canon and in unison whilst also performing and evaluating our own and others sequences. Our fitness focus will be ‘Step to the Beat!’ We will participate in a step routine to music in order to improve our fitness and stamina. Our health focus will be ‘Healthy lifestyles – You are what you eat’ in which we will discuss the importance of a healthy diet and the health benefits of exercise.

History. In this unit, the children will be introduced to the Stone Age and question, what was new about the Stone Age? The children will learn about the Old (Palaeolithic period) and Middle (Mesolithic Period) Stone Ages.

In the autumn term in Year 3, children will be looking at animals, including humans. The children will understand the basic needs for humans to survive and learn about bones, muscles, and joints.

Autumn 1
For the love of reading text
Year 3 will be diving into the narrative of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as we explore the adventures of Charlie Bucket and the other four winning recipients of the golden tickets. Mr Willy Wonka stands before each one as he opens the gates to his magical, elaborate Chocolate Factory, uncovering the prize of a lifetime! Gobstoppers, wriggle sweets and a river of melted chocolate delight awaits the children of Year 3, as we write about the imaginary characters and settings that Roald Dahl has created, as well as writing an explanation text about how cocoa beans are used to make chocolate bars.

In Maths we will be developing our knowledge of number and place value. We will look at numbers to 100 and 1000, find 1, 10 and 100 more or less than a number. We will learn to count up in 50s before building on our knowledge of addition and subtraction from Year 2.
Geography/ History
In our Geography unit this half term, the children will be introduced to different ways of communicating geographical data, particularly through different styles of maps. We will learn to read weather and climate maps, and learn how weather and climate are generalised into world climate zones. The concept of biomes will be explored, each with distinctive soil, flora, fauna and human activity. The unit culminates with our children producing ’The Big Finish Report’. This will include: where specified animals can survive, a weather summary over different seasons, the different climate zones and biomes we have explored and finally how the climate affects our way of life today.
Science
In this unit, we are going to be exploring rocks and have lots of opportunities to become scientists! We will be carrying out investigations to compare and group together different types of rocks and identify what soil is made from. We will also find out how fossils are formed over time.

To support our For the Love of Reading text, we will be visiting Cadbury World to learn more about the history of chocolate.

During our PHSE lessons, we will be discussing how friendships support wellbeing and the importance of including others if they are feeling lonely. We will also identify qualities that contribute to positive friendships.
In RE, we are going to be focussing on Christianity and the Creation Story.

Within DT, we will be practising our sewing skills to create a cushion. We will begin by designing the product before decorating the fabric using appliqué and cross-stitch.

In Art, we are going to learn about the artist Vincent Van Gogh. We will experiment with various pencil techniques to improve our mastery of drawing and use a variety of brushes to apply colour through different methods.
